Emergency Medical Technician


The 200 hour EMT-Basic program is the initial pre-hospital emergency medical technician certification in South Carolina. This program prepares the candidate to provide basic emergency medical care to victims of trauma and illness. This course follows and exceeds the 2009 US Department of Transportation (DOT) / National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum. The course includes:
  • DOT/NHTSA EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum
  • Advanced Airway Module
  • CPR Course
  • SC Enrichment Modules
  • Infection Control
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments
  • IV Maintenance
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction

Entrance Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED (copy must be provided).
  • Eighteen (18) years of age prior to the last class
  • Achieve the minimum score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)
  • Be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT-Basic (refer to Appendix A: Americans with Disabilities Act, Attachment 1: Functional Position Description, for description of all essential duties of an EMT)

The Lowcountry Regional EMS Council is approved by the South Carolina State Approving Agency to receive Veterans Administration benefits for paramedic training. Please contact the Council office for information about utilizing your VA benefits for paramedic tuition. Federal law requires additional specific policies regarding recipients of Veterans Administration Education Benefits. These policies may be found here.

Class size limited to the first 12 qualified, paid registrations. A fully executed payment plan agreement is acceptable to qualify the applicant as paid.

Enrolling
All initial students must complete an Enrollment Agreement in person at the Council office in order to enroll in a LCREMSC program. Students must make an appointment to complete the Enrollment Agreement by calling (843) 529-0977. The Enrollment Agreement may be completed on the day that the student takes the HOBET exam provided the student makes those arrangements in advance.
