Advanced Emergency Medical Technician


The 248 hour AEMT program is the next certification level above EMT. This program prepares the candidate to provide more aggressive care to victims of trauma and airway compromise as well as providing the student with more in-depth patient assessment skills. Skills taught in this program include nasal intubation and IV therapy.

Entrance Requirements
  • Must maintain at minimum a South Carolina or National Registry EMT certification throughout the course.
  • Achieve the minimum score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Refresher candidates are not required to take the TEAS exam.
  • Each student must be covered by employer's Worker's Compensation or have major medical health insurance that remains in effect throughout intermediate training.
  • The clinical contracts require that our office have on file for each student participating in the clinical process a current health statement verifying that the student has tested negative for tuberculosis within twelve (12) months of the beginning of the class and verifying immunization against Rubella, Rubeola, Varicella and Hepatitis B. The Health Statement form and detailed instructions will be provided at the first class meeting.

Students participating in the Advanced EMT program must have:
  • A high school diploma or a GED
  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age prior to the last scheduled day of class
  • Achieve the minimum required score on the Wonderlic Exam (13), or at minimum twelve (12) earned college credits. Students that have State EMS credentials, choosing to re-obtain NREMT by taking the initial EMT Course are exempt from the entrance exam.
  • Must pass the EMT general knowledge exam, prior to admission.
  • Must be physically fit and able to perform all the tasks required of an EMT

The Lowcountry Regional EMS Council is approved by the South Carolina State Approving Agency to receive Veterans Administration benefits for paramedic training. Please contact the Council office for information about utilizing your VA benefits for paramedic tuition. Federal law requires additional specific policies regarding recipients of Veterans Administration Education Benefits. These policies may be found here.

Class size limited to the first 24 qualified, paid registrations. A fully executed payment plan agreement is acceptable to qualify the applicant as paid.

All initial students must complete an Enrollment Agreement in person at the Council office in order to enroll in a LCREMSC program. Students must make an appointment to complete the Enrollment Agreement by calling (843) 529-0977. The Enrollment Agreement may be completed on the day that the student takes the HOBET exam provided the student makes those arrangements in advance.
